Professional Journey #
I’ve been a systems engineer, a systems administrator, and a network engineer (sometimes all three at once). I’m currently a lawyer.
Growing up during the rise of the personal computer shaped my life. I was introduced to computers when my grade school principal wheeled in the schools’ only Apple II computer on an AV cart to show it off. Shortly after that, there was an Apple IIe at my dad’s house. I am told that, after seeing the 1984 Superbowl ad for the original Macintosh, I declared to my mom that I needed one for school. She agreed, and I began my lifelong status as an early adopter of Apple tech. Those early systems sparked a lifelong fascination and set me on a career path.
After being a computer nerd all through grade and high schools, I went to Marquette University to study electrical engineering. I graduated with a major in electrical engineering and a minor in computer science, and began working full time as a systems engineer in 1995, the same year the modern commercial Internet came of age (courtesy of the Netscape IPO). The field of “computers” quickly became the field of the internet. I worked for several ISPs and as network engineer for a Fortune 500 Company. I enjoyed the work, but in 2011 I decided to make a change. I went back to Marquette - this time for law school.
Since 2014, I’ve been an IP attorney, specializing in patent law - in particular the electrical and computer arts. My first career in tech has proven to be a great basis for my second one. I use my knowledge and experience daily while working with inventors to help them protect the latest technology. Although it is the bulk of my work, my practice goes beyond patent law. My full resume is on LinkedIn.
